Safety Play

A safety play in bridge is a strategy where declarer plays a hand in such a way that it's most likely to make even if it means that there's less chance of making overtricks.

What can go wrong?

We end in a contract of 4♠ and there's no way to avoid the loss of two hearts and a diamond but should be ok after that. Can anything go wrong?

A 4-0 trump could be trouble but there's a way to guarantee no spade losers no matter who has all the missing trumps.

Play the ♠A first. If East shows out, cross to the ♠K then finesse. If West shows out, run the ♠T.

Winning Extra Tricks In Bridge

Tricks from aces and kings are easy but we normally don't have enough of them to make our contract. Developing tricks from length is a strategy that you can use any time you are declarer but it's particular common in notrumps contracts.
